Few expected Alabama to be able to hang with the high-powered, number
one-ranked Miami Hurricanes and their Heisman Trophy-winning
quarterback, Gino Torretta. However, Alabama stunned the Canes with a
defensive effort for the ages, giving the Crimson Tide the win and the
national championship.
The play of the game, turned in by safety George Teague, was a perfect
example of Alabama’s will to win. Initially burned on a pass route, Teague
chased Miami receiver Lamar Thomas down from behind and stripped
the ball away, preventing a Miami touchdown and snuffing out any potential
comeback.
