Defining Moments: Alabama

Defining Moments: The Stories Behind Alabama Football’s Greatest Plays will examine legendary plays in Alabama football history and the many ripples, or storylines, emanating from those plays. The initial set of five DVDs will consist of individual, 45-minute documentaries. Release date has been set for Fall 2008.

Defining Moments:

Run in the Mud

Run in the Mud December 2, 1967
Ken Stabler’s 47-yard touchdown run in horrific game conditions proved to be the difference for Alabama, giving the Tide a 7-3 win over archrival Auburn. With less than 12 minutes to play and Alabama trailing 3-0, Stabler followed blocks by Dennis Homan, Dennis Dixon and David Chatwood to the end zone. Auburn would never recover.

The game unfolded just as Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant said it would. The legendary coach predicted the game would boil down to a kicking mistake. Sure enough, Auburn’s punter mishandled a low snap and great field position set the stage for Stabler’s unforgettable romp through the elements.

Defining Moments:

Goal Line Stand

Goal Line Stand January 1, 1979
Number one Penn State trailed Alabama 14-7 late in the Sugar Bowl, a national championship on the line. The Nittany Lions’ drive stalled and ended at the 1-yard line, as Bama’s Barry Krauss led the charge. He and his teammates stopped Penn State tailback Mike Guman cold on 4th down and the Crimson Tide held on for the win.

Alabama would go on to win the Sugar Bowl against Arkansas the following year, giving the Crimson Tide a rare back-to-back hold on the national title. But it all started with the play Bama fans now know by its nickname, “Gut Check”.

Defining Moments:

315

315 November 28, 1981
Paul “Bear” Bryant became college football’s all-time coaching winner, surpassing Amos Alonzo Stagg with his 315th career victory against Auburn. The win also gave Alabama a share of the Southeastern Conference Championship and a 9-1-1 record heading into bowl season.

Two key plays in the game spelled victory for the Crimson Tide: a 38-yard go-ahead touchdown pass from Walter Lewis to receiver Jesse Bendross, and a spectacular run by troubled running back Linnie Patrick.

Defining Moments:

The Kick

The Kick November 30, 1985
Van Tiffin’s 52-yard field goal in the final minute of this epic contest gave Alabama a 25-23 victory over its archrival, Auburn. Tiffin also booted field goals of 26, 32, and 42 yards that day, forever cementing his spot in Crimson Tide lore.

Auburn took the lead with 57 seconds remaining in the game, but a couple of dramatic passes by Bama quarterback and former head football coach Mike Shula put the team in range of Tiffin’s now legendary kick.

Defining Moments:

The Take Away

The Take Away January 1, 1993
Few expected Alabama to be able to hang with the high-powered, number one-ranked Miami Hurricanes and their Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback, Gino Torretta. However, Alabama stunned the Canes with a defensive effort for the ages, giving the Crimson Tide the win and the national championship.

The play of the game, turned in by safety George Teague, was a perfect example of Alabama’s will to win. Initially burned on a pass route, Teague chased Miami receiver Lamar Thomas down from behind and stripped the ball away, preventing a Miami touchdown and snuffing out any potential comeback.
